A little bit about me

Hi, I’m Laura.

I’m a calligrapher and social media manager for small businesses in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

I think my path to small business life follows a well-trodden route. At 17, I had a choice between a creative or academic degree. I chose “sensible” and pursued a History and Politics degree. 

After graduating, I started my career as a temp in the city (when they say those were the days, they really were the days!), then travelled the world on my honeymoon, before finding my niche in public relations, press offices and marketing at big national charities like Breast Cancer Care and the National Trust. What I loved about all these jobs was finding the human ‘story’.  I absolutely thrived on the pace of a busy press office and the human connection of working with case studies to bring campaigns to life.

In 2018, in the midst of the toddler years, the call of my creative side resurfaced. I started Letters Ink as a small tray of handmade cards in a local cafe and soon became known as “the lady who makes lovely calligraphy cards”. From cards, prints and Father Christmas letters to baubles and workshops, I’d found something I loved.

By 2022, I noticed so many fellow small business owners struggling to keep up with their social media. I understand that "social media guilt,” knowing you need to show up but feeling constantly behind, lacking time, energy or confidence. I knew I could help.

Today, I happily run both strands of my business. A typical day might involve hand-lettering a bespoke commission, followed by a few hours of strategic content planning or a filming afternoon for a client.

And me as a person? I like to be unapologetically myself. I've never wanted to follow the crowd. I liked gardening and charity shopping before it was cool on Instagram. I'm an introvert who really has to work at putting myself out there online. I've grown in confidence with age and feel proud to have a business that's true to my values. 

When I’m not at my desk, I’m usually out walking my dog, pottering in my garden or caught up in a book club read. Travel is what fills my cup- there's nothing like a new place to light a creative fire. I’ve intentionally built a business that allows me to prioritise my family, that’s why I don’t work during the school holidays. If my children are off, you’ll likely find us on a Norfolk beach or adventurous road trip together.
